Today marks the 80th anniversary of George Melton Cagle’s death. George was killed on this day in 1945 during World War II.
He was born on January 19, 1925 in Prentiss County, Mississippi. He entered service on July 2, 1943. He was in the 786th Tank Battalion and they were attached to the 99th Infantry Division.
George died on this day when he was accidentally killed by a machine gun of a tank while cleaning the weapon. It is very hard to understand how this could happen, but apparantly this was a common accident.
I adopted George's grave in March of 2015. His brother is buried at Normandy American cemetery. He was KIA on July 12, 1944 in Saint-Lô. I stop by his grave whenever I'm in Normandy and lay flowers to remember him.
George rests at the Henri-Chapelle American cemetery in Belgium.
Lest we forget!
